Syntropy Community Technical Update

September 20, 2022
Community Updates

It’s been a while since we discussed Syntropy’s technical development progress. As you know, we are super busy, especially with our close to 40 developer technology department wanting to push their limits on areas such as Syntropy Stack, dStack, Syntropy Blockchain, DARP, and OBX.

With our most recent PCCW Global partnership and Terraform integration announcements going live, it’s the perfect time to look back and reflect on our last six-month technical achievements and see what is coming up next.

Major highlights include:

  • Organizational changes in the technology department
  • Customer network usage metrics
  • Terraform Integration
  • DARP status
  • Syntropy Stack general update
  • Open Bandwidth Exchange (OBX) status

People

Since the last community technical update, Syntropy technology department has had some exciting changes. We hired Marijana Novakovic for the Head of Network Architecture position, and she has been an excellent addition since day one. Marijana is a true expert in her field, well-connected in the industry, and has managed large architecture and engineering teams for globally known brands such as LinkedIn and Twilio.

Our developer relations team also changed, with Beata Lipska becoming Developer Advocate at Syntropy. Several months in, she is already contributing to updating the Syntropy Stack documentation, organizing product release notes, taking care of the Discord developer community, and even hosting her first Tech Talk AMA with Tim Murphy.

Syntropy’s Product, Network, Agent, and Research teams also had noteworthy new hires and structure changes. The current technology department is perfectly capable of supporting our customer and partner needs while developing cutting-edge technology solutions at the same time.

Our customers in numbers

Entain, a FTSE100 sports betting and gaming giant, is using our technology solutions to securely control and optimize traffic beyond their private network. So far, the relationship between our technology departments has been rewarding since we are learning more and more about the mission-critical application use case. Other deployments also help us to better shape our product market fit and understand the vast scale of the issues we need to solve.

It has been nearly six months since we announced our first public customer, and over this period of time we have collected some interesting insights that I would like to share:

  • Syntropy’s Network traffic usage is 15TB+ per day;
  • DARP optimized 350TB+ of traffic last month;
  • We manage to improve more than 45% of existing customer connections, with some examples of the improvements with connections having their latencies reduced by more than a half.

Have a glimpse at some of the most impressive optimization cases we did for our customers over the last few months:

Terraform Integration

One of the most anticipated improvements to our product is an integration between Syntropy Stack and Terraform. Our developer community has requested it so many times that we’ve lost count. Why is it so important?

Terraform is an orchestration tool that provides infrastructure as code that enables consistent workflow to provision and manage your infrastructure throughout its lifecycle. has been downloaded over a 100 million times and is on its way to becoming the de facto standard for cloud provisioning. Many developers widely use it across the globe to control their services on platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and many more. From now on, anyone using Syntropy Stack as a network management tool will be able to efficiently deploy secure encrypted tunnels between endpoints across even the most complex multi-cloud environments.

Our team has also successfully joined HashiCorp’s network of over 700 partners, which is focused on providing services and technologies to enable the transition to a cloud operating model. As a technology partner, we offer full integration with Terraform solution so our customers can maintain consistent workflows as they deploy their preferred technology stacks. We provide full support for our integration and promise continuous development to meet the needs and expectations of our current and future customers.

DARP

While initial DARP versions were very effective at measuring inefficiencies in small to medium size networks, we rebuilt a distributed protocol from the ground up to be decentralized, lightweight, and trustless. These fundamental design changes enable scalability and utilization of vast resources on the Internet.

We are building the most prominent public network on the Internet under the decentralized DARP, which is:

  • Decentralized — meaning that there is no single authority in the network;
  • Trustless — nodes do not rely on the reported latencies for path discovery;
  • Sparse and optimal — nodes establish and maintain connections with only a handful of neighbors, enough for the protocol to find the best paths.

We are now integrating a new version of DARP to be part of the Syntropy Stack for more efficient and scalable path-finding. Our technical team is working with several partners to make the first large-scale deployments of this version on thousands of nodes to test the protocol’s scalability. In addition, we are building a new public front-end application, allowing everyone to see the new DARP version in action and gain insights into the benefits this protocol can provide for all Internet users. We aim to open-source DARP to foster a better adoption among the networking community and stand as true evangelists for decentralized technology.

Syntropy Stack

The last couple of months at Syntropy Stack’s development was hectic — we’ve introduced loads of new features, from small but meaningful changes like Dark Mode, auditing, and logging features to big brand new functionalities. For example, Shared Workspaces is a big step to shaping Syntropy for bigger organizations, where sharing access to networks requires some limitations depending on the user’s permissions scope. Above that, you can be a member of a few workspaces, so you don’t have to switch accounts to access separate setups.

Syntropy Stack Dark Mode feature

We also shared our API, enabling you to manage your infrastructure via our public endpoints, so you can not only build on top of Syntropy Stack but also automate your processes. For example, create a mesh network between any number of agents by simply calling one of the endpoints with your data.

Learn more about each of these features:

  1. Workspaces and User Roles
  2. API
  3. Dark Mode

And we’re not stopping there. We’re currently working on a Traffic analytics feature that will allow our users to track SDN usage, compare SDN and Public Internet usage, and have a different insight on traffic usage in general.

The technology department is also laying the foundation for dStack. The first feature to come will be Metamask login to the platform. Another short-term goal toward a decentralized version of Syntropy Stack is to allow every Syntropy Stack user to go out there and experience the optimizations provided by DARP. Ultimately, we see dStack being the gateway to on-chain interactions with Syntropy Platform & Open Bandwidth Exchange. The future for this product looks bright, but it’s still a long road ahead.

Open Bandwidth Exchange (OBX)

We just signed a partnership with one of the world’s largest ISPs, PCCW Global. This partnership will supercharge Syntropy’s network, and open up a huge Web3 use case for ISPs and businesses to monetize bandwidth through the Open Bandwidth Exchange. We see them as a co-founding member of OBX, and expect more infrastructure partners joining our grand vision of tokenized bandwidth.

At the moment, we are laying the groundwork & stress testing the tokenomics for community nodes to be seamlessly integrated into DARP to provide the most optimal routes for dStack users. The entire solution architecture, main concepts and workflows will be publicized in our revamped Developer’s Hub, as we try to involve our builders community from the early stages. Even in such an early stage, we have successfully signed exciting partnerships to support the OBX from the infrastructure side. With such talent and infrastructure resources, all of you will witness the development kicking off quickly.

Personal note

I am still firmly convinced that Syntropy Stack will become one of the key gateways for the Web3 future we imagine. We have a fantastic technology department full of skilled and talented people who genuinely believe in the vision that we are working towards. Our partners and customers are simply legends — it takes conviction and balls to lay the first step from Web2 towards Web3, especially in such a macro environment. I respect every person involved in our business and tech relationships who is brave enough to continue innovating and thinking outside the box, especially while representing organizations of a large scale. The Syntropy vision we imagine is only possible with an excellent product, easy to use for individual developers, the retail community, and enterprises. With such a product, we will only achieve the snowball effect towards our user acquisition and token holder numbers. We’ve also got a few expected and unexpected use cases under our sleeves which we’re engaged to explore and bring Syntropy Network to many users outside private enterprise networks. So let’s stay focused and continue building.

Thank you for being part of this journey, and I look forward to chatting with you on our Telegram and Discord channels.
